Wellcome to "FOR PEACE!PEACE!PEACE!"
No more of any kinds of war, no more military uniform for Shichi-Go-San, as worn by these boys photographed from 1939 to 1940.
Shichi-Go-San is a Japanese custom for children at 3, 5 and 7 years old. Parents hold this congratulatory event to pray for children's health and happiness. The children generally wore kimonos, but in wartime a military uniform, as seen here worn by my brothers during World War II. My father saw the Hiroshima explosion, and later said to us as he told of the A-bomb's cloud, "Do not hate the man, but hate his crime." I thank my father because if he had then spoken antagonistic words about Americans, we perhaps would not have been able to remove that from our brains. Now I revise it to "Do not hate a nation, but hate its crime," and I emphasize that understanding each other represents the key to peace. Kazue Takamori
